The Atlas robot, which has two arms and two legs like a human, was built by a Boston company. Worcester Polytechnic Institute engineers have been working on improving its control software since last summer to expand the machine’s capabilities.

Ultimately, WPI researchers expect bipedal robots and other autonomous technologies to go where it’s too dangerous for people to tread and perform emergency tasks beyond the capabilities of traditional robots.

“This was a first attempt. Are we there yet? No. But maybe in the next five to 10 years, we are going to get there,” said one researcher.

WPI’s humanoid robot program is part of a larger future emergency response approach it is working on with other universities and technology companies. The Smart Emergency Response System team eventually will include humans, rescue dogs, drones and other robots.
