If the reports are true it means that North Korea is preparing an unprecedented offensive against the south, of a kind that was never seen before.

As we reported last year, North Korea uses Russian technology to develop EMP-based weapons, aimed at paralyzing the electronic military equipment of its southern neighbor. According to statements given by the South Korean spy agency to the parliament, North Korea has acquired Russian EMP weapons in order to develop similar weapons of its own.

Electromagnetic pulse weapons damage electronic equipment. At high levels of power an EMP event can cause extensive damage, including damaging aircraft and other objects. An electromagnetic pulse is caused by radiation particles created during nuclear detonations.

A pulse created by a one-megaton detonation can cover an entire country and ruin every electronic device in it – including critical infrastructure – effectively bringing everything to a halt. Without power, communications, transportation or commerce, an EMP attack at these levels is nothing short of a national disaster.

Local sources stated that North Korea understands that in case of attack, its only option for survival is to paralyze attacking countries without using nuclear weapons – if the nuclear weapons are actually operational. “They understand that using nuclear weapons will doom their country. Using an EMP weapon can give them an advantage over their enemies without effectively committing suicide,” according to one source.
