The Pentagon sent its Bluefin unmanned submarine to Australia. The unmanned underwater vehicle will join the search for the flight recorders of Malaysian flight MH370, which, according to the latest assessments, crashed about 1,000 kilometers from the western Australian city of Perth.

According to the Institution of Engineering and Technology E&T magazine the underwater robot is equipped with a sonar and is capable of reaching depths of 4,500 meters, remaining active for up to 24 hours at a time. The unmanned submarine is five meters long and weighs 800 kilograms. The Pentagon decided to send the submarine in order to locate MH370’s flight recorders, necessary in order to find out what exactly happened.

The flight recorders transmit low frequency acoustic information that can received from a range of up to 10-15 kilometers. The batteries of these devices can last up to 30 days.

The vehicle will reach Perth on Thursday with a team of 10 operators, some in uniform. The Pentagon has made it clear that the submarine will be effective only if the search area is clearly defined. “The vehicle must know exactly what are the borders of the search area,” said Pentagon spokesman, Rear Admiral John Kirby. “It needs a clearly defined area to search, and we’re still not there.”
