Fast Draw – Dangerous Toys

Things aren’t going to change anytime soon, there won’t be an agreement. This is just a case of top officials embracing their inner child and playing pretend.

The U.S. led the way – embracing a nuclear Iran and ignoring Jerusalem’s warnings. Washington and Europe fail to understand that the entire world will suffer, not just a specific country or area. The Iranians have a plan – they want to become a world power, protected under a nuclear umbrella. Right now nothing is stopping them, nothing is even slowing them down.

Experts who talk about a “nuclear threshold state” and similar terms are simply misleading the public. Iran will soon have a ready-to-launch nuclear bomb. Everything else is just an embarrassing bluff.

Wherever you turn, all you see in Israel is chaos. Criminal assassinations, police officers under investigation and non-functioning municipal authorities. Cabinet ministers, meanwhile, enjoy their clean and stress-free existence high up in the Knesset. Soundproof walls block the noise from the explosions outside, including those of the Purim fireworks, illegally sold for weeks before the holiday begins.

Yesterday a 40-year-old woman from Netanya was arrested with thousands of fireworks and other dangerous toys. According to suspicions she used to drive to locations frequented by children and teens, and sell them the dangerous fireworks.

Her arrest occurred during routine activities taken by the Netanya police against the sale of dangerous Purim fireworks. While patrolling officers noticed the woman making her way to a local school. In her van were thousands of fireworks, along with toy guns capable of shooting plastic or metal pellets. Police suspects that the woman used to drive around in her van, selling her illegal merchandise directly to the children.

There have been cases in the past where children lost fingers or suffered other injuries. Possession of these items is illegal, but the law in Israel is sometimes more of a recommendation.

The dangerous items find their way here from China. How did they make it into Israel, exactly, even with all the advanced security measures taken by port authorities? Why isn’t the police busy raiding the vendors? If that happens we may find ourselves living in a less chaotic place, but that’s unlikely.

The Israeli police expressed anger after being criticized over its inability to stop the recent deadly criminal assassinations. According to a Channel 10 survey 80% of Israelis believe that the police is unable to deter criminals.

The survey was a little redundant – the fact that our criminals ignore the police is very well known. The police itself isn’t responsible, though – it’s the government, who doesn’t allocate the necessary funds in order to allow the Israeli police to recruit personnel or acquire resources.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu did state earlier this week that he’ll give the police whatever it needs, but we heard this kind of statements before – they’re inspiring and imaginative, but ultimately still just empty promises.

Maybe this time will be different. It can’t hurt to be optimistic once in a while, even in a place like Israel.

In this chaotic, “do what you may” atmosphere, it’s not surprising that shots were fired toward a handicapped hostel in Tel Aviv. If I was the Internal Security Minister I’d order police to make capturing the vile madmen responsible their top priority.

This is Israel, though. The case will be mentioned for a day or two, then added to the gigantic pile of unsolved cases. It begins by firing on a hostel for people with disabilities; unless it’s stopped right here and now things will get much worse.
