Explosive Detector Gains TSA Approval

An explosive trace detector from Smiths Detection meets new Transportation Security Administration guidelines and is on TSA’s approved equipment list.

The company’s IONSCAN 500DT is for screening cargo, packages or baggage. It uses Ion Mobility Spectroscopy to perform material analysis in seconds.

TSA equipment procurement guidelines that took effect at the beginning of this year require that “when procuring equipment from the ACSTL (TSA’s Air Cargo Screening Technology Lists), regulated parties are encouraged to select equipment from the qualified technology section.”

Smiths detection said its IONSCAN 500DT meets the administration’s qualified standards and that earlier model IONSCAN 500DT systems in use can be upgraded to maintain TSA qualification.
