In order to protect the thousands expected at Havat HaShikmim for Ariel Sharon’s burial ceremony authorities have taken special precautions: Ground and aerial surveillance, Iron Dome system and more.

All that because of the threat of rocket fire from Gaza during the ceremony. Defense officials admitted that special precautions have been taken, but gave no other details. Over the last day a special joint command post has been established next to Havat HaShikmim, under the direction of the Israel Police and including officials from MDA (Israeli emergency medical service), the IDF and the Defense Ministry.

Ariel Sharon’s casket left the Knesset this morning on its way to Latrun, where top IDF officers will attend a memorial ceremony. Afterward the procession will continue to the Beit Kama Intersection and finally to Havat Hashikmim, where Sharon will be laid to rest in a full military burial, his casket carried by eight Major Generals.

The IDF and the General Security Service have prepared several scenarios for “irregular events” during the ceremony, each with its own prepared response. Yesterday last preparations were conducted for each of the scenarios. Ground units and Air Force aircraft – manned and unmanned – will use various sensors and other means of surveillance in order to detect any anomalies.
