Egozi’s Fury: Release of Palestinian Prisoners – a Dangerous Mistake

egozi's fury featureOnly an oblivious, naïve or stupid government is capable of considering the release of more Palestinian murderers next week, according to the schedule of the “peace talks”. Only that type of government (pick your preferred adjective) fails to understand that there were never, and there will never be peace talks. What we actually got instead of these so-called peace talks was another intifada. Even in this situation, when official spokesmen meekly refer to the rising wave of terror threats as “isolated incidents”, our government is about to hand out another gift and get nothing in return.

Top Palestinian officials in Ramallah are probably having trouble believing it themselves. They know that the so-called “talks” will never lead to an agreement; they know about the renewed intifada. But the Jews give, so why not take? Gaza threatens to kidnap Israeli soldiers; in the west bank they don’t say anything out loud, but they certainly don’t put too much effort into preventing terror attacks. Even novice analysts know that the west bank security agencies can prevent terror attacks, it’s just that no one told them to go ahead and actually do it.

So Israel will release the second batch of terrorists. The stale negotiations will continue, and it will be an opportunity for top officials on both sides to engage in much protocol and festive media coverage. Not a bad arrangement, if only it didn’t have to be associated with so many bad Israeli decisions. The IDF and the General Security Service are stunned again and again by the Israeli government’s attitude. Even the most experienced officers can’t understand this self-defeating, terror-encouraging behavior.

The Palestinians express great joy at the situation and call for many more terror attacks. “Strike the Jew and watch him run away” would be the official motto in Ramallah, except saying it out loud would only harm their cause. Gaza, as mentioned earlier, issues overt threats, but even in that case the policy is “don’t provoke them”. Everybody ignores the vast terror infrastructure being built in Gaza right now. The recently discovered terror tunnel is only the tip of the iceberg.

So that’s how the Israeli government runs things. When the Prime Minister goes on a visit to Rome they appoint two temporary deputies to take his place. Self-important ministers compete to see who gets the most respect, while the actual, critical issues get ignored.
