On July 10th, as part of its Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstration (UCAS-D) program, the U.S. Navy completed the first landing of an unmanned aircraft from a carrier ship, which follows the catapult launch that took place on May 14th, the first of their kind in aviation history. Developed by Northrop Grumman, the X-47B is the first tailless, autonomous unmanned aircraft for carrier operations. And Wind River® VxWorks® is its primary computing environment.

VxWorks was chosen by Northrop Grumman as the software platform for the UCAS-D program, and by GE Aviation as the foundation for the Common Core System, the backbone of UCAS-D computers, networks, and interfacing electronics.
