14312674_sThe Defense Department is bringing in IBM executive Daniel Prieto III to serve as its new director of cybersecurity and technology, the department announced this week.

In the newly created position, Prieto will take the reins of several existing initiatives, including managing DoD’s information sharing program with the private sector, said DoD spokesman Lt. Col. Damien Pickart.

According to Defense News at IBM, Prieto served as vice president of the company’s Global Business Services, Public Sector, in Washington. In his new role, Prieto will manage the Defense Industrial Base Cyber Security/Information Assurance program and its optional DIB Enhanced Cybersecurity Services component called DECS.

Prieto will be tasked with improving and growing the voluntary information sharing program, aimed at protecting industry networks and unclassified information about DoD programs that resides on those networks, Pickart said. The number of industry participants has grown from 34 in May 2012 to more than 90 companies.

Under DECS, which Prieto will also oversee, DoD shares with Internet providers and other companies highly classified threat signatures at the secret level and above, Pickart said. All but one of the 14 participating companies are paying an approved commercial provider to incorporate DoD’s classified data into their network defenses and offer it as a service.
