Security guards and guns are a bad mix!

11765935_sYesterday’s murder of a Jerusalem lawyer and his daughter proves that guns in the hands of security guards spell danger rather than security.

A disgruntled security guard, upset about a financial dispute, killed Natan Jorno, 56, and his daughter Yamit  26, who was interning at her father’s firm.

The suspect went into their office and shot them several times in the upper torso.

Last month a security guard in the Western wall plaza killed Doron Ben-Shlush, a Jewish worshiper.

After the first shooting, the relevant ministries declared that “something has to be done” with the many fire arms carried by security guards after working hours. After a lot of meetings and much noise, nothing has changed.

This time nothing will be changed either because these ministries prove time after time their impotency to handle important situations.

I can say with full confidence that there is no point in arming the numerous security guards that are employed throughout the country.

In most cases they are poorly paid, out of shape, and have not received proper training to use a gun, especially not under stress, and if they do, there is a high probability that innocent people will be hit.

Still the authorities are doing nothing.

There are two ministries in charge and both are useless when it comes to solving such a simple problem.

Guns should be carried around by trained people. Most of the security guards are trained according to minimal requirements of the law. Very few of these armed security guards actually stopped terrorists. But in one month two of them are suspected of using their guns to commit murder.

But make no mistake. Nothing will be changed because that is how things are done here.
