Better Detection In USA Airports

More details emerge of the US government’s plan to improve “dramatically” the ability to detect improvised explosive devices in carry-on and checked baggage at US airports

The U.S department of home land security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate released a draft broad agency announcement (BAA) on Dec. 20.
The goal of the current effort is to provide technologies to define next generation architectures and detection capability performance that can be validated in a future system .
DHS will pick companies for full proposals by March 22 and those proposals are due on April 19. Award negotiations will begin May 23 and contract awards begin Aug. 5.
The next generation of detection systems must improve the capabilities to detect current and emerging improvised explosive threats while reducing the likelihood of a false alarm partly through an improved library of improvised explosive threats.
The project has five major task areas and DHS may make multiple awards in each area. Those areas include X-ray test bed prototypes, supporting analytical tasks, test and evaluation support, architectural components and X-ray system architectural design concepts.
